Safe and Humane Exclusion
When bats take up residence in a home, particularly in attics, humane and legally compliant exclusion methods are paramount. The timing of any intervention is the most critical factor to ensure the welfare of the bats, especially the young.
The period of June and July is the maternity season in Ontario. During this time, baby bats are born and are entirely dependent on their mothers for survival, unable to fly. Installing one-way exclusion devices or sealing entry points during these months would effectively trap the flightless pups inside the structure, leading to their starvation and eventual death. Such an outcome is considered inhumane and is illegal under provincial and federal wildlife protection laws.
